INVESTMENT IN KIDNEY DISEASE PREVENTION, RESEARCH, AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION

Bill and Danielle Gottfried, the Founders and Directors of The Kidney Research Institute of Texas, are committed to helping end the global kidney disease pandemic where one-third of the world’s population is at risk for kidney disease. The Kidney Research Institute of Texas was established to be a catalyst to help accelerate investment in kidney disease prevention, kidney disease research, and technology innovation to support kidney patients. Since 2020, Bill and Danielle Gottfried have personally invested over $250,000 to support kidney research.

In this New Year of 2025, Bill and Danielle are committed to accelerating investment in kidney health research and kidney disease prevention. Bill and Danielle are not relying on Federal Government funding. They are focused on health care endowments and health care philanthropic organizations, private sector financial support from organizations interested in kidney health research, international donors, and individuals who have been touched or who have family members and friends who have been touched by kidney disease and kidney failure.

The Kidney Research Institute of Texas was established in memory of family members who suffered from kidney failure, including Bill Gottfried’s Father, Henry William Gottfried, Jr., CDR, U.S. Navy, Submarine Service.

Please continue to visit this web site as we will be providing updates on our activities as we press forward in 2025.

We thank you for and we appreciate your interest in kidney disease research. Kidney research is not an area that garners a lot of attention, unfortunately. However, as mentioned earlier, one-third of the world’s population is at risk for kidney disease.

The Kidney Research Institute of Texas supports kidney health investment in Houston.

The Kidney Research Institute of Texas continues to press forward to develop programs designed to accelerate investment in kidney disease prevention, including nutritional and dietary management programs for elementary grade school students as well as for adults, kidney disease research, and technology innovation to improve the lives of kidney patients. We are committed to ending the worldwide kidney disease pandemic. According to the National Kidney Foundation, one-third of the world’s adult population is at risk for kidney disease.

Our goal is to help make the Houston medical and health care community the world leader in kidney health investment and take the leadership role, worldwide, in investments for kidney disease prevention, kidney disease research, and technology innovation to improve the lives of kidney patients.

We continue to meet with the leading Nephrology and Kidney Research Teams in The Texas Medical Center in Houston to advance our goal and vision of accelerating investment in kidney disease prevention, kidney disease research, and technology innovation to improve the lives of kidney patients. These activities are ongoing.

Bill Gottfried is honored to serve as a Ambassador for the American Association of Kidney Patients and Dialysis Patient Citizens where he works to support investment in kidney health to improve the lives of kidney patients. Bill has been a fundraiser for the National Kidney Foundation.

Kidney Disease Facts

Kidney Disease Facts (credit to the National Kidney Foundation and the CDC)

In the United States, 37 million adults are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD)—and approximately 90 percent don’t know they have it.  1 in 3 adults in the U.S. is at risk for chronic kidney disease.  Risk factors for kidney disease include: diabeteshigh blood pressureheart diseaseobesity, and family history. People who are Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian American, or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander are at increased risk for developing the disease. Black or African American people are almost 4 times more likely than Whites to have kidney failure. Hispanic or Latino people are 1.3 times more likely than non-Hispanic or non-Latino people to have kidney failure.

Approximately 785,000 Americans have irreversible kidney failure and need dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive. More than 555,000 of these patients receive dialysis to replace kidney function and 230,000 live with a transplant.  Nearly 100,000 Americans are on the waitlist for a kidney transplant right now.  Depending on where a patient lives, the average wait time for a kidney transplant can be upwards of three to seven years.

The Kidney Research Institute of Texas Works to Advance Support for the Kidney Patient Community in Houston

The Kidney Research Institute of Texas continues to press forward to support the kidney patient community in Houston. Bill and Danielle Gottfried, the founders of The Kidney Research Institute of Texas, will be initiating a capital campaign to support programs focused on kidney disease prevention, kidney disease research, and technology innovation to improve the lives of kidney patients, including investments to accelerate dialysis technology innovation, renal replacement therapies, and artificial kidney technology. Dialysis technology has not changed in over 40 years, thereby causing kidney patients to continue to suffer and have massively reduced quality of life. Bill Gottfried’s Father died from kidney failure 40 years ago, the dialysis machines he was on then are the same machines in use today at dialysis clinics. This is a tragic and unfortunate situation. The major dialysis providers have done nothing to improve the lives of kidney patients. We are committed to bringing dialysis technology innovation into the 21st Century and dramatically improving the lives of kidney patients. The Kidney Research Institute of Texas is committed to, and focused on, this goal.

The Kidney Research Institute of Texas Pushes Forward to Advance Improvements in Kidney Patient Care

Bill and Danielle Gottfried, the founders of The Kidney Research Institute of Texas, continue to push forward in 2021 to help advance investment in kidney disease prevention, including the development of nutrition, dietary management, and life style management programs; kidney disease research, including identifying the leading kidney research institutions worldwide that warrant additional funding to advance kidney disease research; and advanced technology innovation, including the identification of leading technology innovators, worldwide, developing new dialysis technology platforms and renal replacement therapies, including technology innovation leading to the development of an artificial kidney. We remain committed to improving the lives of kidney patients and those at risk for kidney disease by supporting prevention, research, and technology innovation investment to improve the lives of the kidney patient community. One-third of the world’s population is at risk for kidney disease. Our goal is to help end the global pandemic of kidney disease.

Caring for Kidney Patients in this New Year

Bill and Danielle Gottfried formed The Kidney Research Institute of Texas to help care for those who are affected by kidney disease and kidney cancer. The Institute was formed in honor of family members who have suffered from and died from kidney disease. 73 million Americans, 1 in 3 American adults, are at risk for developing kidney disease; 30 million Americans, 1 in 9 American adults, are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD), although most do not know it. Over 705,000 Americans have irreversible kidney failure or end state renal disease (ESRD). Source of data: National Institutes of Health, The National Kidney Foundation, and Centers for Disease Control.

Bill and Danielle Gottfried have embarked on a journey to help those in need by supporting kidney disease prevention, kidney disease research, and improvements in patient care, including the acceleration of technology innovation to improve dialysis treatment that remains painful, debilitating, and inhibits the quality of life for those affected. Dialysis technology has not advanced in over 40 years, our goal is to advance technology innovation to improve the quality of life of kidney patients.

The Kidney Research Institute of Texas supports the outstanding research underway worldwide and we will work to capitalize on new scientific discoveries and research that will increase the potential for finding cures and novel candidates for new drug therapies that can prevent and cure kidney disease.

We are initiating a major fundraising campaign in 2021 to support kidney disease prevention, kidney disease research, and technology innovation to improve the lives of kidney patients. We will be working with leading philanthropic, endowment, public and private organizations, sovereign wealth funds, and individuals who are dedicated to ending the global pandemic of kidney disease.

We are committed to finding the cure for kidney disease and for caring for those who are suffering from kidney disease. We look forward to having you join our effort to support the kidney disease patient community , we thank you for your consideration and interest.
